WESTWOOD IS DAMN HAPPENING
westwood is damn happening. in a span of four days, they had a transformers movie premiere, a linkin park concert with big flashing lights, iran and UCLA employees protests, and Michael Jackson dying at morton medical centre right nxt to campus with helicopters flying over head and tv vans and reporters and cameras etc etc. this morning we were at school, and there were like helicopters overhead then i was like oh maybe they are taking some overhead shot for some movie. by the afternoon, we went out and we saw like about 6-7 helicopters hovering in mid air overhead. and we were like huh what on earth is going on. is the president coming here or sth? we were like just happily shopping for groceries and neccessities..and then we went round this corner and saw lots of people and lots of tv vans so we were like hmm ok lets go see what the hoo-ha is about. and then we walked on and saw like lots
a reporter guys and cameras and microphones and people being interviewed..so we were really wondering what was happening. then we saw michael jackson posters around so we thought ahh so michael jackson is here!! maybe he's here for some other concert like linkin park. then after that we saw like everyone was gathered outside the hospital..so we were like hmm maybe he's here for some nose job. then i spotted like MJ's photos and some yellow flowers on the grass..and the reporters were looking very sombre etc etc. so tall nut suggested..maybe mj is in the hospital in critical condition. we stood there about like 10 mins..wondering what on earth was happening and trying to overhear reporters..then we decided to ask someone. then we were like 'err hi so what's going on here?' and the girl was like 'oh michael jackson died!' and another girl turned around to face us and said 'yup he died. he had a heart attack and died'. and we were like super super shocked.

singapore is boring.
by the by. we cooked japanese beef stew ystd with microwavable rice to go with tall nut's celery ikan bilis soup lols. and we fried omelettes too. yummy yummy. :D and today we had macaroni with spaghetti sauce and tonight for dinner we gonna have some sorta chicken stew (courtesy of tall nut again) and stir-fried veggies!
lessons are boring too. bleah.

Butterfingers and Handstand escapades: the curse of the elusive bedsheets and pillows
21 June 2009
This day was a hell lot of a day for butterfingers and handstand. We had the worst experience of our life trying to find household goods, especially pillows and bedsheets. 1st, we went Ralph's, just opposite our own apartment. Tried to find laundry powder detergents labelled 'high efficiency', but to no avail. . We gave up and returned home with the barang barang we had. Next, we tried Trader's Joe, but it sold mainly food. So, we crossed the road and went Rite Aid which sold all sorts of household materials, even mattresses and clothes line. We wanted to buy plates too but the plates sold there were non-porcelain and the plastic plates were the disposable kinds. There was this cool set of plates which was made of sugar cane apparently and was water and oil resistant, but we were told that they couldn't be washed. So it's another failed attempt here. We also tried CVS pharmacy but tadaa they don't sell bedsheets too. We turned hungry and so we decided to go try the starbucks here at westwood to see if they sell our yummy piadinis. But ALAS. they didn't have it boo:( so we bought a coffee to share. they dun have my iced expresso like they do in singapore too. sad. the straws in starbucks are super super longgggg.
okay yep so we thought bedsheets and pillows and blankies were the most impt thing on our agenda, otherwise we'd be sleeping on empty (and possibly mite-y) mattresses that night. since all the places we tried didn't sell mattresses, we tried asking the starbucks person where we could find em. they told us that there was this place in LA called target, which was super difficult to get to without a car, and they weren't even able to give us the directions cos i think it was too complicated. haha. so we thought why not try claremont hotel to see if they could sell us some sheets and pillows? since after all we checked out from there that very morning. so we trooped over to the claremont hotel and asked them, but they said that they weren't able to sell it to us. they did advise us to go over to this shopping mall called westside pavilion, but we had to get there by the big blue bus 8 or 12, and they gave us the directions.
so then we had to find out where on earth to take these buses, so we walked back to the starbucks area to try to find out where to take it. after some asking around, we finally found the stop to take our bus! haha it was our maiden voyage out of westwood and also the first time taking the big blue bus. it was quite exciting. and the thing is we knew nuts about how to pay the fare, where to get down, etc etc.
the bus came, and we got up. so the first thing was to ask how to pay. and then we realized we had to pay 75cents each, but we didn't have dat many coins. so we ended up feeding 1 buck into the machine. it was really cool sitting in the bus for the first time, and we took some fotos! and we looked like real retards cos they had all the bus guides down there on the bus and we were just there grabbing every single guide so that we could reference it next time we wanted to travel out of westwood.
something very interesting happened during the bus ride. halfway through, the bus driver stopped at this bus stop, and told everybody on the bus 'i'll be right back'. then she took her handbag and walked out of the bus toward the petrol station. lol. and the bus was left open and unattended the whole time. this sorta thing doesn't ever happen in singapore. not that i've seen. haha.
anyway, we successfully found our way to westside pavillion shopping centre (hallelujahhhh!) which looked huge cos it was 2 big buildings joined by an overhead bridge. nearby there was this small shop saying "SALE! mattresses and linens" so we decided to go in and ask the guy there. but unfortunately he only sold everything together as a package, bed frame and all. so he told us to go try macy's which was in the building called nordstrom. Went nordstrom and saw for our 1st time here in LA, a proper cinema theatre like those you find in singapore shopping malls, for e.g golden village. niceee. Found a shop which sold bedsheets for a price of 200USD. Crazy, i wonder i the bedsheets are made of gold. Headed to the bed section only to find really expensive bedsheets again and they were branded. Clavin klein and Raulph Lauren. haha we don't need such good bedsheets! It was getting late and we were starting to panick! No sheets for the night?!?! We decided to take a chance and call UCLA international office instead for help. We wanted to use the public phone there but had no coins. Walked around the whole ground level in nodstrom trying to find someone who could open the register and exchange with us notes for quarters. Went to a cafe, bodyshop, a few other stores, a stranger and then finally back to the cafe to exchange for coins. That took a really long time! When we finally got coins, we tried using the public phone to call UCLA but the office was closed to our dismay. BOO. The information centre advised us to go bed, baths and beyond at Bundy road, which meant that we had to take another bus. But seeing the sky's getting dark, we decided to take a bus back to UCLA instead and see if we could loan bedsheets from a hostel. Hopped onto bus 8 and happily rocked back to UCLA. Wanted to alight at hilgard terminal but cos of some reason, we alighted way before the terminal (maybe 3 or 4 stops). When we alighted and took a look at the map, we were sooo pek chei cos we could have alighted just outside Murphy's hall (where the international office is). OH well, we didn't want to spend another 3 quarters taking a bus so we WALKED all the way upslope towards Murphy's hall. Tried to entertain ourselves while we walked and happened to pass by many apartments labelled with combination of mathematical symbols like chi and ohm. At 1st we thought that only geeks or professors stayed at these areas, but later we realised that the houses were for fraternity purposes. COOL. took some pictures along the way.
ok, so when we reached Murphy's hall, it was closed. Damn. decided to walk to Westwood Chateau Apartments which were where Jocelyn and gang stayed. Took a long long long long walk across UCLA, passed by the building where we were gona to have lessons the next day (PAB). Had to walk up this super ulufied slope up to the apartment. On our way up, we saw many guys in sportswear, so we assumed it's the area where all the sports people lived in. We were scared by the thought of having so many suspicious guys around this area and started walking up fast the slope. We went into a university apartment on the way up and they told us that they sold bedsheets. WOW finally we could get some bedsheets. But to our disppointment, they were out of stock. double boo. WE WENT SO MANY PLACES ALR. the bedsheets and pillows were obviously hiding from us. So we continued walking up slope in an attempt to find joce's apartment. Asked this lady for directions and she so happened to be an exchange student in NUS before. COOL. but she took economics so we didn't know her friend in NUS. She advised us to go ROSS which we mistook for RALPH's. Told her we couldn't find any there and headed back down slope. Found the Westwood chateau apartments finally but they also didn't have bedsheets! ZOMG
Then, it was about 8pm already and the sky was really getting dark. Headed towards the bottom of the slope where we were suppose to meet tall nut. Suddenly, this red sports car honked and the blacks in there yelled something out. We weren't sure who they were shouting at but it was real scary. butterfingers and I wanted to escape so we brisk walked away from them, turned around to make sure they weren't following us and found them stopping around a corner. OMG they stopped! We were praying that they won't follow us and called peigen immediately to tell him to hurry to the reagan medicial centre which we were at. Butterfingers and I decided that we should just enter the medical centre for safety purposes. So we went in and sat down there waiting for tall nut, the pseudo hero, to arrive. We were so desperate for bedsheets at that time we even thought of asking the hospital for bedsheets loan. AHHHH. but before we could ask, tall nut appeared. So we just headed for dinner at noodle planet. BOOOOO NO BEDSHEETS.
lol anyway so in the end we slept without bedsheets so we bought lysol disinfectant and spammed it on our matresses. and slept like that that night. handstand put jackets and her laptop cover into her pillowcase to make a makeshift pillow, and butter fingers wrapped her jacket around her feet to make a makeshift blanket. haha that's the end of our adventure!!

another short entry
wahaha we have finally moved into our apartment and gotten our internet set up!! so here i am blogging from the apartment! :D haha but then again everything is not cleaned up and there's like dirt and dustballs everywhere and leftover food and stray items from the previous tenants.
some pictures of our apartment:
haha yeps that's just like the common area and one of the bedrooms. more pictures please go to facebook haha! we're gonna caption the albums too. past few days it's been terribly difficult to upload fotos cos the internet connection was really bad but the internet now at the apartment is fine! :) so more fotos coming up!
hokays. maybe i'll post another entry tonight about like the random things i noticed here. i already have a list! haha. byeeee.

we are moving in today!!!
hello!! it's like 9 am here and the church bells which ring every hour just rang :) it's a very pleasant sound to hear. we're supposed to be moving at 9am but then tall nut hasn't called us or rushed us so i decided that i shall type a post. depending on when tall nut is gonna come breathe down our backs, i could type a long or a short entry. haha.
GACK tall nut just called crap. so we have to go now. anyway in reply to handstand's entry..don't worry, i have my clothes pegs to use to pluck off tall nut's arm and leg hairs. :)
ANYWAY! there's gonna be a transformers premiere today at westwood!!!!! we might be gonna look see look see see if we spot some movie stars etc wahah.
more laters! gotta go :D

the day we saw our apartment for the 1st time
yay. We had good meals almost everyday. Today, we ate at Sak's which does not sucks:) Had rice with grilled or bbqed chicken and beef with a shrimp side dish. YUMS. I love eating rice. Learnt to appreciate rice more after coming US. But when I return to singapore, I will probably revert to eating like a baby tiger. blah.
Collected our keys to the apartment and got to explore the apartment abit. Our apartment interior is nice! It's clean considering that the previous tenants were 4 guys. The lights are abit dim but i guess they will do. Good atmosphere to sleep at night then. If we want to study, we can probably camp at coffee bean which is just opposite the apartment. Actually, I can't wait to move into our apartment. Then, we can cook our own food and invent new stuff. Might also have chance to work on our FST product development project early! WIIIOWWW. There’s a walk in closet in each room and the beds are huge. There are 3 queen sized beds! yayy. Now that I think of it, Darwin did mention that a queen sized bed could be split into 2 beds. Maybe that’s why we seem to have an extra bed in the room. The house is considered quite big. And HURRAY! it’s the 1st building with a lift that we are going to stay in. No more pulling luggages up one steep flight of stairs anymore. (ahhh the photos didn't load for this part. shall upload again next time)
UCLA orientation was quite useless. The only important things we got from going to Ribber Hall was the guides and maps I feel. and also maybe the form needed for submission. But we managed to see people from across the globe and from our own country. Well, it feel good to see people from your country because you know you are not in this all alone. There are people experiencing the same..experience. lol
Dinner was at Mr Noodles. I ate some war wanton noodles soup which is just a huge version of the noodle soup in Singapore and at 3 times the price (8USD). But too bad, I wanted some soup to warm me up. I didn’t regret it because the soup tasted good. I think I should continue sharing food with butterfingers so that I don’t waste food and $$. Butterfingers, please remember your 70%!
At many times, I’m really glad that I came as a group of four (ok say 3). Butter fingers and tall nut always have fun laming shit. And I must apologize if I seem to be dao or anything. But if you all haven’t realised, I like to zone out in my own world at night, when I can do something alone and catch up with other people back in Singapore. So, sorry if I haven’t been exactly paying attention to the “fun” at night. Tall nut had a great time irritating butterfingers with its naughty ‘piaky’ fingers. If it continues to do that, it might get another slap really soon. Please watch out.
it’s late. time to sleep!

WE ARE IN LA LA
we're back in los angeles after 5 days in beauuutiful san fran. im telling you, san fran is seriously one of the nicest places i've visited. nice weather, nice people, interesting places to visit, although the food wasnt that great. la isnt as cold compared to san fran, probably due to the traffic and higher number of people. i havnt perspired at all over here, the only time i perspired a little was when i was carrying the luggage from the hostel to the main road. the weather in san fran is damn nice, although it can get a little chilly sometimes.
anyway, i noticed that americans are generally friendly people. catch each other's eyes while walking down the corridor and you'll probably get a hi or how are you doing from them. unlike singaporeans who will probably quickly look down on the floor and pretend there's something there. friendlyyyy. ask them about their day in return and you'll get a fine or awesome in return. sometimes hearing things like this will really make your day. i've also noticed that they like to use thank yous as a form of sarcasm, similar to the way we use eh thanks ah.
we spent the whole of yesterday at the golden gate park. it's this park that is the size of a housing estate in singapore or something with beautiful scenery. we went to the japanese tea garden early in the morning, followed by the academy of science and then stow lake. the tea garden was damn nice, i like the japanese houses in the garden and the landscaping. the entire place wasnt very big, but maybe the way it's designed made it seem much bigger. the academy of science was an interesting place. it's this science centre/discovery centre -like place, just that it's much more interesting. the key attractions of the academy are the 3d theatre which was showing this boring 3d show about the life story of a butterfly and how a praying mantis ate the butterfly. nothing really spectacular. i think i was asleep for 2/3 of the show. then there was this exhibit showcasing the flora and fauna of tropical rainforests. we didnt bother visiting this cos we thought that we had enough of it already back at home, and the queue at this exhibit was really quite long.
the attraction i was looking forward to was the planeterium, which is this dome like lt with projectors projecting image from the floor onto the dome ceiling. which means that it's actually this super wide screen tv. anyway, the planeterium is supposed to give us an idea of how small our world really is, as compared to the whole of the universe. the show was alright at the beginning, but towards the ending it started to get a bit boring. i was dozing off towards the end of the show, and the reclined seats didnt really help in keeping me awake. still, i think the academy was still quite a good visit, although the entrance fee was a little steep at 20 usd.
we went to stow lake after the academy. i dont know why it's called stow lake, cos to me it's like this stream, just that it's longer and a little wider than most streams. maybe we were at the wrong place. but still, the lake/stream was still quite nice, with ducks and pigeons and people boating, and along the way we saw a family of squirrels at the botanical garden.
uncle tong drove us over to ocean beach after that, and it's damn bloody cold at the beach. i couldnt really take pictures properly cos the wind was damn strong. small people will confirm get blown away. in the end we didnt go down to the beach, cos we were all having trouble walking and there was sand blowing everywhere. so after the beach we went to some other places before having dinner at a chinese restaurant, which was good cos i was getting sick of eating oily stuff with no fibre for the past few days. the claypot rice served was totally different from the singapore claypot. instead of dark soy sauce, we were given this diluted dark soy sauce or this light soy sauce. and meat and everything was separated from the rice before being mixed. still im not complaining, it's like the first nice meal in a long while.
so today we're in la now. havnt really explored much, but westwood really seemed like a safe palce even at night. no hobos or people chasing after you. and you can actually see students still walking around the place at 9pm. we walked past our apartment just now, and from the outside it looked like it's a damn nice place. dont know about the inside yet, but i hope it'll be as good as the outside. we wont know until monday, cos that will be when the present tenants will be vacating the place. so now we're currently putting up at this place called the calremont hotel which is only 3 mins away from the apartment. this whole thing is acutally quite convenient, and the ucla ent is only like what, 5 mins away from the apartment? the only issue is that my lt buildings are damn far away from the entrance. i think it'll take something like 30 mins to get to my lessons. not good.
i need to shower and sleep, not thinking properly already.

by the way
tall nut was very super interested in getting a thong from the kinky thong shop. probably to scare off the zombies.
hi
hi i am a tall nut and i protect the plants from zombies. i am perpetually frowning. i tear a little when i get excessive bites from zombies. but even so i'll still be frowning.
i am a little sleepy now, i need to get some sleep but butterfingers says i have to post something. i am frowning now because i am feeling sleepy and i cant sleep because i have to post something.
i am getting abused by people here. they are like zombies trying to eat my owner's brains, and i am getting abused in the process. i need a pumpkin ring.
san francisco is a really nice place. they have a lot of demonstrations and protests. maybe not a lot, but i still saw one today and heard that there was another one. the first was about the local jailing system and budget cuts. the other one was about the elections in iran. they really like to poke their noses at other people's business. but still san fran is a cool place. damn bloody happening.
the hobos here are scary. they are good at what they do. they'll camp at junctions and outside convenience stores and ask people for extra change. sometimes they'll get extra pushy, which can be get quite scary because they look like they will poke you with a knife if you do or say anything to them. even though i am a tall nut, i dont think i'll like to have a knife stuck somewhere in me. the only thing we could do was to avoid them and try not to get near to them.
besides the protests and the hobos, the other thing that makes san fran damn bloody happening is the castro. castro is this little residential area/suburb that is the centre for gay, lesbian, transexual and bisexual activities. they have a lot of kinky shops there. we saw bookshops selling queer literature. there was this shop selling kinky underwears with a lot of g strings. there was this shop called if only your mother knew and they sold damn kinky sex toys. damn happening i tell you. and a lot of video rental shops renting erotic movies. something like in the dressing room with three semi naked football players. we saw a couple of gay couples, but too bad no lesbian. i think i may have seen a tranny, either that or a really feminine asian uncle.
anyway, that's not what really makes the castro a damn happening place. the architecture of the place, combined with the liveliness of the entire area makes it totally different from the other residential neighbourhoods of san fran. you know you're in the castro when you see one million rainbow flags around. if im not wrong, the rainbow flag symbolises gay, lesbian, transexual and bisexual pride. the whole place is just different from the other neighbourhoods. the others say i am excited over the place. i think this place is powah, damn happening.
i am getting burnt. too much sun, too little clouds, and i refuse to use sunblock or moisturisers. but at least i will look darker.
everyone's gone to sleep. i already told butterfingers im not going to blog tonight because im going to take a million years to write a post. ok so i took only 20 minutes, but it's still damn long. butterfingers was reading what i wrote as i was posting, but butterfingers got bored of reading my long post and decided to go to bed.
handstand has mouth ulcers. handstand kept using fingers to apply the mouth ulcer medication, which is not going to help cos hands dirty from handstands will make the ulcers worse. so handstand please use q tips.
the tall nut is going to bed. too much bites from zombies. it's going to be a long day tomorrow, we're going to golden gate park and some other places. i will probably talk about the other places we visited in another post. i am going to sleep.

everyone's gone to sleep. i already told butterfingers im not going to blog tonight because im going to take a million years to write a post. ok so i took only 20 minutes, but it's still damn long. butterfingers was reading what i wrote as i was posting, but butterfingers got bored of reading my long post and decided to go to bed.
handstand has mouth ulcers. handstand kept using fingers to apply the mouth ulcer medication, which is not going to help cos hands dirty from handstands will make the ulcers worse. so handstand please use q tips.
the tall nut is going to bed. too much bites from zombies. it's going to be a long day tomorrow, we're going to golden gate park and some other places. i will probably talk about the other places we visited in another post. i am going to sleep.
